Greenbushes Community Garden, Greenbushes

Our Enterprise

The Greenbushes Community Garden sits at the heart of Greenbushes next to the Town Square. It occupies an important space in the hearts and minds of local residents. Established in 2011 with the handover of privately owned land and building to the Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes to be developed as a resource for the community. Under the auspices of the Greenbushes Ratepayers and Residents Association a subcommittee was established to develop the garden along organic & permaculture principles. The garden’s aim is to be a sustainability information hub with ideas and inspiration, educating in ways we can care for our environment and for each other. It also hosts the local office of the Blackwood Basin Group in the building. This cooperative partnership is the Community Garden’s contribution to their four year Priority Bittern and Waterbird Biodiversity Project.

Our Garden

The Community Garden is now thriving with community managed vegetable plots, mini orchard, a frog habitat garden, native bee and bug hotels, insectary gardens, nature play area for kids, native gardens, recycled garden art and a workshop/meeting space in a formerly disused building on the site. The building harvests its own power with a solar panel & battery set up and is almost self-sufficient in water with 4 rainwater tanks. Gardening for food production and to support biodiversity are the central themes of the garden’s activities with many of the designs and workshops revolving around these. You can take a self-guided tour at any time and read the information signs about these important aspects of the garden.

Community inclusion is the main objective of our garden and each month on the first Saturday we hold a community morning tea & crop swap where everyone is welcome to come along and socialise. The community garden is a platform for people of all ages to come together, develop friendships and support networks and we are seeing the positive outcomes for the health and wellbeing of the whole community.
