Balingup Lavender Farm,  Balingup

Our Enterprise

Balingup Lavender Farm began in 1998 with a trial area of some 15 varieties of Lavandula angustifolia.  From those results were chosen five varieties on which to concentrate. The five varieties selected for their particular suitability for use as cut flower, dried flower and oil-bearing properties.  As the trial patch was to become part of the Open Garden, it was laid out in a 'parterre' style. The landscaping began with pick and shovel and has continued in the same way.

When lavender flowers are harvested, a portion is dried and the remaining crop is steam distilled from the surface of the florets (buds) for their fine essential oil.  There are several varieties to choose from as these are distilled individually.  Our premium lavender oil and flowers are then used to create a wide range of original beautiful products.  The garden studio, opened in 2000, operates as shop and Art Gallery.  It sells those craft products made on the farm, lavender cosmetics, plants and produce made from the farm lavender.

Our Garden

Visually: the Balingup Lavender Farm offers a formal lavender garden planted in parterre format, with a backdrop paddock planted in straight rows, set against beautiful sweeping valley views.  This farm only grows true French lavender,  Lavandula angustifolia, native to the South of France the only lavender varieties suitable for use in perfume and culinary uses.

The main production area was originally prepared and planted, in June 1999, with over 3000 lavender plants, now approximately 6000 plants.  General garden landscaping continued adding deciduous trees which are under-storeyed with lavender, shrubs and colourful perennials. Three olive groves and a cherry orchard form a varied green backdrop to the lavender.

Our Point of Difference

The quality: Just like a fine wine, a number of factors affect the quality of an essential oil, including the botanical origin of the essential oil, the part of the plant used, the climate where the plant was grown (i.e. level of UV light), the cultivation and harvest techniques used, the time of harvest and the method of oil production.   All oils are kept for at least one year to mature.  The farm’s lavender oils have undergone chromatographic tests to ensure they meet international standards.
